We cultivate organic rice in the Ebro Delta, according to Organic Farming legislation, in a 52-hectare farm belonging to SEO/BirdLife that functions as an Ornithological Reserve, and in two other smaller plots leased to Riet Vell. Occasionally Riet Vell also buys rice from other organic producers, but always from farmers located in the Ebro Delta. The Ebro Delta is one of the most important wetlands in Europe and a critical area for the survival of many endangered bird species. Thanks to a combination of lagoons, reedbeds, beaches, bays and ricefields, the Delta enjoys a huge diversity of habitats, which make possible its astounding biological richness. Rice farming and, especially organic rice farming, form a key element in the ecosystem of the Delta, ensuring the survival of a number of species such as the Squacco Heron, the Purple Gallinule, the Audouin Seagull, the Purple Heron and the Whiskered Tern.
